Gemma Castro is a Mexican-American composer, sound artist, and engineer working across experimental music, film scoring, and music production.
A Grammy-winning engineer, Gemma’s work spans collaborative and solo projects across performance, installation, and songwriting. She is known for creating emotionally rich, innovative sonic worlds in both artistic and commercial settings, and has collaborated with some of the most forward-thinking artists of our time — including Julia Holter, Yves Tumor, Anderson .Paak, and Jimmy Iovine.
Gemma studied composition and experimental sound practices at CalArts under sound artist Michael Pisaro. She later trained under producer Marta Salogni in London and worked as assistant to Oscar-winning composer Laura Karpman.
As a composer and artist, Gemma has been commissioned by the Alliance for Women Film Composers, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Human Resources LA, and the Mike Kelley Foundation for sound-based installations and original compositions.
Currently based between Los Angeles and Mexico City, Gemma is at work on her debut record.
